Bankhead Lake

Located in Alabama

Bankhead Lake is a large reservoir located in west-central Alabama, in the counties of Walker, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa. It was created by the construction of the Bankhead Lock and Dam on the Warrior River, which is a major tributary of the Tombigbee River. The lake spans over 9,000 acres and has a shoreline of over 130 miles. Bankhead Lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and water sports. The lake is home to several fish species, including bass, crappie, catfish, and bream. There are several boat ramps and marinas located on the lake, making it easy for visitors to access the water. The Bankhead National Forest, which is adjacent to the lake, offers hiking, camping, and other outdoor recreational opportunities. In addition to serving as a recreational destination, Bankhead Lake also provides important benefits for flood control, navigation, and hydroelectric power. The Bankhead Lock and Dam, which created the lake, was completed in 1915 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and named after Senator John H. Bankhead, who was a prominent advocate for the project.
